1.1 Korean family (tree)
In a Korean family tree, they have many relatives and generations. The relatives are kind of similiar to other country family trees. There can be many or less generations in a family tree. For example, if there are 3 generations, the first generation is the grandfather (할아버지), the second generation is the father (아버지), and the third generation is the son/daughter (아들, 딸). Also, there can be many or less relatives in a family. For example, there are cousins translated: 사촌, 사촌동생, 사촌언니, 사촌오빠, 사촌누나, 사촌형. Also, there are two sides of grandparents. Those are the father and mother side. In the mother's side, they are called 외할머니, 외할아버지, 외숙모, 외삼촌, and many more. In the father's side, they are called 친할머니, 친할아버지, 친삼촌, and much more.
My family has my father and mother's side families. I call my mother's side by 외, for example, 외할머니, 외할아버지, 외삼촌, and 외숙모. I call my father's side 친 or just by their names, for example, I call my grandmother and grandfather 할아버지 and 할머니 when it's originally 친할머니 and 친할아버지 for the father's side. My mother's side family is mostly in Korea, so I don't see them much. All of my father's side family lives in California, so I see them all the time or most of the times. My family meets up most of the times and have lunch together most of the times. We especially meet on special events like birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Mother/Father's day, and many more occasions.
